What is the safest brand of black tattoo ink?
What is the safest brand of black tattoo ink? Question by our reader Sam D:
I’m concerned by the reality that tattoo ink is not FDA regulated.
Are there any ink manufacturers out there who make it a point to supply full disclosure on what’s in their ink, or any inks marketed as especially safe?
I’m looking for a extremely black ink (1 used in tribal tattoos and such).
Thanks for your help!

Ahahahhahaahahahaaaaaaa of course its not FDA regulated. If they did they would ruin the ink organization. All inks are secret recipes!

I use Kabuki black ink. It’s a great black.
If you’re all that concerned about whats in the ink you’re using, the ingredients are on the bottle. I believe that most inks do that though, and they also provide a date they were produced and when they need to be thrown out. Even tattoo ink has an expiration date. You can get Kabuki ink online, it’s manufactured through Skin Candy. They have perfectly safe ink and a selection of bright, beautiful colors. Also I like their Roan shading inks in black cherry. I don’t really like the tribal black, myself. It doesn’t compare in vibrancy to the Kabuki black, but that is my opinion.
All the black inks are fairly safe, black is the only shade that is truly an ink, not a pigment, with the exceptions of Tribal Black, or Turbo Black, these are both pigments. They come out healed, looking more like a flat black, than a shiny black. Kuro Sumi makes some good ‘lining’ black that is great, as does Intenze, which makes Dragons Blood, which I highly recommend. The only black that I would really caution against, is the original Japanese ‘Sumi’ black, the kind that comes in a block, that you rub in a small pan of water, with a ribbed bottom. I have had some serious reactions to that stuff, personally. You usually run into that stuff overseas, so don’t worry about it. They’re are ‘organic’ inks on the market, that are FDA approved, but I haven’t tried any of them. Take care.
